To celebrate the end of the big tournament, which will be played on September 24th to 25th, a massive simultaneous game will be held on Thursday the 26th in Safra square, Jerusalem, with 1000 people playing against the best Israeli players!
The Safra Square is a city square part of the Jerusalem Municipality complex, with buildings including the municipality’s administration. Located in a central part of the city, near the former Green Line between West and East Jerusalem, it is used to host many large events, including sporting events.
So, how does it work?
50 masters will compete against 1000 players, meaning each master will play against 20 players, each of whom will be trying their best to defeat, or at least draw against, the pros. In a simultaneous game, the master makes one move per time against each opponent, with the opponent then obliged to make his next move when the master comes back to his table, and so on. So, it means that the players have much more time to think compared to the masters, who must make a move almost immediately when arriving on the board.
Here are some of the big names who will be playing in the simultaneous game:
*Israeli 5 national team members: GMs Ilia Smirin, Maxim Rodshtein, Evgeny Postny, Avital Boruchovsky and Ido Gorshtein, who will also play in the Masters tournament.
*The young GM Yahli Sokolovsky, who is only 17 years old.
*The fresh European Under 18 Champion WFM Noga Orian.
* GM Yehuda Gruenfeld, the capital city’s strongest player.
*The simultaneous record-breaking GM Alik Gershon. As some may remember, in October 2010, Gershon set the Guinness World Record for simultaneous games after playing 523 opponents in Tel Aviv. He will also be the online commentator of the main event.
And many many more Grandmasters and talented young Masters.
